How to play “You Shook Me All Night Long”

This song, You Shook Me All Night,  was the first single featuring his singing talent. He came up with the line – “She was a fast machine, she kept her motor clean” when he realized that cars and women were very much alike – they go fast, let you down, but then make you happy again when you see the new model.

You Shook Me All Night Long on Guitar

AC/DC is well known for playing whole chords and power chords when playing the guitar riff. You Shook Me All Night Long is no difference. They uses G, D and C major chords among other for this song. If you are familiar with these, then this is an easy song to play. Good luck!

This song (and this lesson) has 2 guitars playing the riffs. Well try and discuss each part of the guitar and each and every guitar riff that was played.

How to Play Intro Guitar Riff (Guitar 1)

Below is the tablature of the guitar 1 riff. This is basically the ‘lead part’ of the riff.

This is played over the D chord. The first note is the D power chord followed by the slight bent of the 4rth string on the 3rd fret – the F note immediately followed by open D with A note on 3rd string (D power chord).

Second beat on second bar is the slide from 3rd fret to 4rth fret followed by another A and D note (D major power chord – reverse root note). Then from 3rd fret (F note) to open D  string (D note).

The next power chord is G (reverse root note) with fingering on the 8th fret and 7th fret on the 3rd string. This fret remains and from 8th to 10th fret on the second string. Strum it twice and pluck second and third strings alternatively. You may want to refer to the image/tablature above this section or better yet to the video above.

How to Play Intro Guitar Riff (Guitar 2)

The second guitar part is played over the first part in almost sync manner. Below is the tablature for guitar 2 part.

Mostly an open note on the D string, the first note is the strum of the partial G major chord, strings 1, 2, 3 and 4 are in play – open string 3rd and 4rth string and 3rd fret for the second and first string.

Second bar for the intro (guitar 2) are all 8th notes with 2nd and 4th beats are the partial G major chord. The rest of the notes are open D strings (D note).

How to Play Verse Riff

For the verse part of the song, we’ll be playing the whole chords and strumming them and letting the sound of the guitar riff ring out.

The first beat is the G major chord with the A string (5th) muted (you can refer to the image for the duration of the explanation here).

Two beats will be at rest and the last quarter note is the C major chord. The next chord is the same G major (A string muted) and back to C. Both chords receive 1 beat each.

The final beat is the G major 8th note then the last 8th note is the D power chord (open form)

How to Play Chorus Riff

youshookmeallnightlong-chorusThe chorus part of the song has a single picking, whole chords and the ascending notes on the A string related to the C major.

Start by plucking the G note on the 3rd fret of the 6th string. That’s one beat, quarter note. Followed by another quarter note/one beat and its the G major (muted A string) chord. It stretches to the 8th note and other other 8th note for the 3rd beat is an open A string followed by second fret and 3rd fret of the A string.

Next one is the open G in the 3rd string followed by the 3rd fret on the second string (D). The paired 8th note for that D note is the B note and it can be done by fretting the second fret of the 5th string back again to the D note. Repeat as needed :)
