HOW TO PLAY MONEY FOR NOTHING ON GUITAR – DIRE STRAITS

how to play dire straits

how to play money for nothingAlbum: Brothers In Arms

Released: 1985
Charted:
No. 1 in the US Charts
No. 4 in the UK Charts

The guitar riff intro part is very recognizable and there are tons of guitar licks all over the songs.
As far as rock riffs go, this one is one of the more complicated.

You’re really going to have to look closely at the accompanying video. Not to worry though, I’ve broken the riff down, I’ve filmed both my hands, and I’ve played it slowly and carefully.

Be patient, avoid getting frustrated, and you’ll figure it out. I love this riff.

You want to make sure to play this riff in a short, punchy, staccato style. However, you’ll notice certain parts of the riff are marked in red.

These are notes/chords that you want to let ring out. Listen to the riff and you’ll see what I mean.

Maybe that’s the reason why I haven’t mastered the song yet. Anyway, on this post hopefully you will learn how to play Dire Straits’ Money for Nothing.. or the intro guitar riff at least.

I found this very informative and detailed video tutorial. Although not in English, I am sure you will appreciate how he plays it and how he breaks down each part of the song.

How to Play Money for Nothing by Dire Straits

Before the main guitar riff plays, there are about 18 bars of ‘extra intro’. This is the part where some choir voice sings or something.

Bar 20 officially starts the intro of the song (as seen on the image on the right).
