HOW TO PLAY “KRYPTONITE” BY 3 DOORS DOWN

how to play kryptonite

how to play kryptoniteI can’t believe I have not posted any 3 Doors Down songs on this blog. After all, most of their songs if not all have these cool guitar riffs that I always wanted to play along. On this post, the first 3 Doors Down lesson, we are going to learn how to play “Kryptonite“.

Brad Arnold, the band’s lead singer, wrote this when he was just 15 years old in a math class. Apparently, he was bored to death and he started tapping his pencil on the desk and that was the beginning of that drum beat intro of the song.

How to Play Kryptonite

The song is in the key of Bm, or at least it starts with the B minor chord and its ‘family’ of chords. If you’re a beginner guitar player, this is one of the easiest songs to play as well.

Just like a number of 3 Doors Down songs, Kryptonite has arpeggios all over the songs – intro, verses and other parts.

The chord progression is Bm-G-A and then it repeats.

You can refer to the image on the left for the chord formation, fingering position, tempo and the arpeggiated notes/chords.

You may notice that the downward plucking is on the first 4 notes of the chord. That is constant. The upward notes varies. For example, the Bm-G transition after the D note on the B string, G 4th fret then D 4rth fret, you then take off your left hand from the fret board and pluck the open G string as you prepare to do the G major chord.

Arpeggiate the G major chord on the top 4 strings followed by the Asus2. Pluck the first 4 strings. We then repeat.

Learn Kryptonite From Guitar Tricks ( A Review )

Kryptonite is one of the song of 3 Doors Down that Guitar Tricks is teaching on their website (unfortunately it’s for members only). I learned that song from that website and the instructor that taught me how to play the riff was Mike Olekshy. There is a 14 Day trial for GT if you’re curious what it is like in the members full access are. It’s risk Free, so there should be no worries on that.

The whole song was broken down into 14 video tutorials. Each video is very detailed and Mike showed every little details and notes on how to play the chords, arpeggiated notes and strumming pattern for all guitar part of the song.

Before those lessons, he also explained how to achieve the 3 Doors Down guitar tone and the effects, gears that they are using.
