HOW TO PLAY HELL’S BELLS RIFF – ACDC

hells bellsHell’s Bells is the first track of AC/DC’s greatest albumBack in Black. In the previous post, we mentioned that the Back in Black album is the band’s tribute to Bon Scott, the band’s former lead singer who died in an alcohol overdose.

As a tribute, the song starts with a church bell towing 13 times before the music starts.

How to Play Hell’s Bells

Please watch the video to learn how to play Hell’s Bells. This is not my video.. not yet anyway. But I will be creating my own tutorial video on how to play this ACDC song.

To play the intro riff of this song:

  • bar the 2 strings (D and G) on the 7th fret with your first finger.
  • place your pinky finger on the 9th fret of the 3rd string.
  • the first four notes will be played with that position, see image below –
  •  how to play hell's bells on guitar
  • pluck open A string, the G string (9th fret), the D string (7th fret) and releasing the pinky hence playing the 7th fret of the G string). The resulting fingering will be the first finger barring the D and G string on the 7th fret.
  • With the finger still barred on the 7th fret, pluck the D string
  • The next note is the open A string. When you pluck it, place your index finger to the 5th fret, barring the D and G string.
  • The next note the 5th fret of the G string.
  • After ringing for half a count (8th rest), pluck the D string (still on the 5th fret, barring index finger).
  • From that position, place the pinky finger on the 7th fret of the G string then pluck the open A string followed by that 7th fret G string (pinky finger).
  • The next note is by playing the 3rd finger on the D string followed by the 2 A open notes.
  • hell's bells
  • We then repeat the whole riff

That’s it for the intro part of the song Hell’s Bells.

There are a lot of great riff in this song and if you want to learn the whole song, you must get a copy of the tablature.

A minor, and features the kind of aggressive bending and pentatonic playing that Angus often uses.

This free lesson is from an 8 lesson Artist Study at Guitar Tricks. This AC/DC tutorial looks at the

foundations of the band’s signature tone, how Angus and Malcolm voice their chords and give them movement, some of the pentatonic

licks they use, the use of open string licks, and double stops. In the final lesson there’s a jam along session with a rockin’

Hell’s Bells Lyrics/Chords

Lyrics:

Hell’s Bells (Young, Young, Johnson)

I’m a rolling thunder, a pouring rain

I’m comin’ on like a hurricane

My lightning’s flashing across the sky

You’re only young but you’re gonna die

I won’t take no prisoners, won’t spare no lives

Nobody’s putting up a fight

I got my bell, I’m gonna take you to hell

I’m gonna get you, Satan get you

CHORUS:

Hell’s Bells

Yeah, Hell’s Bells

You got me ringing Hell’s Bells

My temperature’s high, Hell’s Bells

I’ll give you black sensations up and down your spine

If you’re into evil you’re a friend of mine

See my white light flashing as I split the night

‘Cause if good’s on the left, then I’m stickin’ to the right

I won’t take no prisoners, won’t spare no lives

Nobody’s puttin’ up a fight

I got my bell, I’m gonna take you to hell

I’m gonna get you, Satan get you

CHORUS
