In today’s post, and accompanying video, we will learn how to play “3AM” by Matchbox Twenty. Although the song and its composition is credited to Rob Thomas, Jay Stanley, John Goff and Brian Yale (members of their band – Tabitha’s Secret), the lyrics really was inspired by Rob’s experience during his younger years when he was taking care of his mother who is sick of cancer.
She’s fine now by the way and survived it. while performing together in the early 1990s band Tabitha’s Secret. The lyrics are inspired by Thomas mom. When he was an adolescent he was living and taking care of his mother who is fighting to survive cancer.
The song is an easy song to play and is really played on an acoustic guitar. One thing to note is here is that this song uses a capo on the first fret. The chord forms is G major, C add 9 and D major. We will play along with those chords in the song. Since there’s a capo on the first fret, the sound of it is actually G#.

How to Play 3AM Intro
The chords for the intro is G major followed immediately by the Cadd9 chord. You can follow along the strumming pattern in the video above. But basically you strum G moderately fast followed immediately by the Cadd9 chord and pause for a second.
You then play 3 notes which is the open D string, 2nd fret D string and open G string.
The G-Cadd9 pattern is then repeated but the second time, the 3 notes are played on the high strings. These are the 3rd fret E string, 3rd fret B string and the open G string.
The guitar tablature for the intro is the image shown above. You can click on that image to bring you to Songsterr and you will be able to play that tab in their player.
